Copper to fibre converters introduced for Profibus

Two PROFIBUS-DP copper to fibre converters, designed for harsh industrial applications, convert between standard PROFIBUS-DP copper cables and a fibre optical link.
Westermo Data Communications are to show two new PROFIBUS-DP copper to fibre converters at the Profibus International User Conference/Exhibition at Coombe Abbey, Warwickshire, 27-28th June 2006. The ODW-611 and ODW-612 convert between standard PROFIBUS-DP copper cables and a fibre optical link. They are designed for harsh industrial applications, in industrial, roadside or railway installations.

A maximum distance (between units) of up to 80km (50 miles) can be obtained via the fibre link depending on selected transceiver and fibre type.

The ODW-611 is suitable for point-to-point installations, whilst the ODW-612 can be used in either redundant ring or multi-drop applications.

In a redundant ring application the overall distance of the network can effectively be hundreds of miles.

Both converters can achieve the maximum PROFIBUS-DP data rate of up to 12Mbit/s.

The data rate is set automatically as soon as the modem has identified a correct data frame.

Retiming ensures the correct PROFIBUS-DP signal format.

The converters have a nine-position D-sub PROFIBUS-DP connector.

The LC-fibre connectors can be either single or multimode.

The multimode version enables a maximum distance of 2km, whilst there are three single mode connector options that can offer 15km, 40km or 80km.

The converters have both a status interface for error indication, as well as LED error indication.

A redundant power supply is also available.

As well as having a stand at the exhibition, Westermo UK managing director Alan Bollard will also present a paper entitled `Extending the range of Profibus' on the 28th June.

The presentation looks at both fibre and modem options as well as solving the problem of putting 12Mbit/s data rate into low capacity high latency links.
